We put a group together March 2001 and visited my sister on Grand Bahama, easily combined with a Florida trip, only a short ferry ride from the US coast.
Boat cruise along the coast
Freeport Harbour is a deepsea harbour, the stop of many high sea containerships from Europe and the East. The cargo is distributed to (or collected from) US ports from their. Nearby is the town itself and a smaller harbour for yachts and cruisers. The island is hardly populated and offers miles of unspoilt and lonely beaches. A new luxury hotel offers a paradise of watersports.
Favourite spots:
Satisfied customers leaving "Pier One"
The village type market near the yacht harbour and the beautifully painted houses. Karaoke and dancing were called for on Saturday night at the arena nearby.
What's really great:
Gusti & Chris with dolphins
Our contact with dolphins. There are only a handfull of places around the world where one can swim together with these mammals. Amazing and one of the best experiences of my life.
Sights:
A lot of beaches. Canoeing is offered at the swamps, exiting!
Restaurants:
Icescream treat
Andy's Ice Cream and steaks at the Pier Restaurant at the main harbour entrance. At the Pier, the custom is to throw rests over the banister and whats sharks fight for the food!
