If you stay in Naples or surroundings, it's a shame not to visit Pompei. It's a day trip, but you have to be prepared for walking and lot's of sun in the Summer. But don't let that keep you away from visiting this remarkable place.
|
There are few ways of visiting Pompei. First there is organized way with your guide, then unorganized without guide but you can rent a mechanick guide where you type in the nr. of a place where you are at and it gives you the description in one of 4 languages, and there is a way of visiting without guide and than accepting the ofer of some local to be your guide for the day. As I said, Pompei is rather big and my suggestion is to get a map of it and get organized before you start wondering around. There is one restaurant with a toilet and the rest of market toilets I couldn't find. There is also a souvenire shop in there.

Favourite spots: |
Walking arround Pompei, you get to see many interesting things. My favorite spot was the Arena. I imagined it to be much larger, but I guess when you are fighting lions, it's as big as it gets! Just thinking that at the exact spot where I was standing, thousands of years ago, people fought wild animals, brought chils to my bones.

What's really great: |
It was great wondering around and imagining how it all must have looked before the Vesuvius erupted. Pompei was not a part of Roman Empire, but it was independent and very rich. Traces of that are still somewhat visible. The only thing I didn't like is the way the remains are being treated. You could see some of the wall paintings covered with plexiglass but it is not visible. Many corners are just blocked, interesting points are not well marked and it is exclusively in Italian...

Sights: |
Don't be shocked if you see odd souvenires ayt wendors. Before you wrinkle your face and start laughing, you should know that penis is a symbol of Pompei. Back than it was used to scare away the evel and it could be found, as a symbol, in every house in Pompei.
To get better knowledge on all this, make sure you visit Archeological Museum in Naples with a guide.

Restaurants: |
As I said, there is a restaurant in the sight and it is a rather fair one. All you need can be found there: beverages, fast food, toilete, souvenire shopp... And prices are not bad neither considering the type of the place.
In front of the sight, you can find many other restaurants but I am not sure of prices and offer.
|
|
Other recommendations: |
If you are interested in getting souvenires, be prepared to leave lot's of money at wendors. Prices are unbeliveable! You might try to bargain, but it does not neceseraly mean that you will manage to lower the price. There are a few parking lots and you choose the one you find the most soothing.
