The shortest path of flights between N.Europe and NW.America is over the Arctic. Choosing Icelandair for such trips offers a midway stop for those wanting to experience the icelandic way of living, unique.
Reykjavik Christmas Lights
The capital Reykjavik is center of Icelands fish and production industries, relatively a very small city (pop. only ~100 000) and extreamly clean and organised.
Favourite spots:
- the small lake in the city centre - the back streets with cute and colourfull houses
What's really great:
- New Year Celebrations with friendly hosts. Great fireworks, had heard that the locals spend more on fireworks per capita than any other and that the profits go to charity.
- experiencing the seemingly endless nights, the sun appears only for a few hours and just above the horizon. I'd like to come here in summer for the opposite. -saunas
Sights:
Hallgrim's Church
- Kolaportio Market
- Hallgrim's Church
- Fishing Harbour & Piers
- Botanical Garden
Accommodations:
Sculpture at Hotel
Countless hotels and guest houses! I think there must be more beds for tourists than locals. I stayed at Hotel Loftleidir. When I woke up with a hangover, they offered an extra night stay (free) and arranged the flight changes.
Hangouts:
Small business, big hospitality
A lot, nearly every street has its local pub or more. Theres a sort-of restaurant-pub-club near the coach terminal.
Although this is only a very short report I enjoyed reading it. Great tip about flying Icelandic Air and their stopover.....even better news about a hotel accommodating a hangover!! Nice pictures too.
