Saint John travelogue picture
Saint John, the oldest incorporated city in Canada, has witnessed many historical events. With a population of just under one hundred thousand habitants, it offers a variety of activities, from hiking trails by the sea at the Irving Nature Park, Mispec Park & Beach, and Rockwood Park, to a taste of Canadian history at Martello Tower and Fort Howe.

Uptown is where you’ll discover King's Square and the Old Burial Ground. The Squares are two of four, laid in the Union flag pattern designed in the late 1700.

Favourite spots:
You’ll find on Germain, Charlotte and Prince William St., many quaint boutiques, an assortment of galleries, nightlife, and great architecture.

For a unique shopping adventure, visit the Old City Market where you’ll find local arts and specialty foods. The market is connected by an internal pedway system to Brunswick Square Mall, the New Brunswick Museum, the Delta and the Hilton Hotels, the Mercantile Center, Harbour Station and Market Square.

Red Rose Mansion Bed and Breakfast Inn is situated at 112 Mount Pleasant Ave., it is close to Rockwood Nature Park, where you’ll enjoy a sandy beach and hiking trails in summer, or skiing and skating in winter. Also, it is situated close to the Horticultural Gardens on Seely St. Red Rose is home of Red Rose Tea, learn about its history in its original setting.

Throughout the year Saint John holds numerous festivals. Contact the local tourist office for specific dates at www.tourismsaintjohn.com.

What's really great:

Saint John has many exciting day trips. On Douglas Ave.enjoy Jet Boating at the Reversing Falls, experience the world’s highest tide from up-close. For a panoramic driving escapade from Grandbay to Quispamsis, where you can hop from one ferry to another for a fascinating way of discovering the Saint John River. Or go Whale Watching in the Bay of Fundy.

Nightlife:

The Aquarius and the Three Miles offer an assortment of music and age group. Both are far from city center so be prepare to pay for a cab if you drink alcohol.

Hangouts:

I'm always pleased to recomment Oleary's as they often have live bands.
The pub is divided in half, one offering recurring and assorted music, while the other side offers an Irish slant.

Restaurants:

For Fine dining stop by Incredible Edibles at 42 Princess St. It has exquisite cheese cakes. The service is excellent and the restaurant enchanting. Feel at home in a converted turn-of-the-century house divided in small, intimate rooms holding only 3 to 4 tables each, an original fireplace and Feng Shui center pieces.

Or why not eat or stay at Suwanna Restaurant and Inn at 325 Lancaster Ave. It is located within an old Victorian home, one that we wouldn't immediately relate to Thai food. The house has kept its charm, with the large fireplaces, high ceilings, and in addition a delightful view of the bay of Saint John and of Reversing falls.
