Verona Opera
Posted: 2006-06-19 04:04 AM
Very pleased you are a Verona and opera fan too. I wish see "Aida" live with so many extras. I was invited to the Munich casting having done some of the stuff before, my big fat body was foreseen as a slave driver, but other commitments had priority! I did catch parts of the show on TV and it seems to be a very spectacular big hit, continuing to tour europe. The next show is in Düsseldorf in September.
More pictures comming up soon: Lido de Jesolo and religious Padova from a "blitz-trip". Sadly my digital camera strikes, backup pics are from scanned classical 35mm photos!

Visiting USA
Posted: 2006-06-13 09:10 AM
Marianne,
I can understand how you must feel. I have re-entered the US 6 or 7 times since 9/11/01 and have not found customs significantly different, but as a US citizen, perhaps I don't have to complete the same forms. I wasn't aware of anything such as you describe and I would feel the same hesitation that you do. Flying internally has changed a great deal, as you can imagine.
When on Globo, I often feel assaulted for my nationality. Hostility has been said in chat rooms, guestbook posting and private messages which I certainly do not see express toward other Countries. Bashing Americans is in vogue but many of us do not agree with overall policy and many of the statement that have been made are sweeping generalizations. In addition, we are well aware that VAST amounts of money go to out of this country in aid while some very real needs here go unaddressed.
I am sorry you that have been impacted.

Hi Marianne
The comments were valid enough and anticipated but I don't agree with those who want every photo to be a competitive entry. I sometimes find a rather poor but [hopefully] informative picture is better than nothing, subject to some limits of course.
I suppose the dome of the cathedral in Firenze is sufficiently well-known for a poor photo to be unnecessary but I should defend, for example, my photo of the wall organ at Trevi for its informative aspect. Obviously I'm not too affronted that it only received 2* because I know that many members sincerely disagree with my view and rate on the basis of quality alone.
Cheers

Ikaria
Posted: 2006-06-12 11:33 AM
Marianne,
Yes, Ikaria was a sponge divers island - there was a large imigration of Ikarians to the US in the 30s (I forget why) and a number of them settled in Clear Water, Florida, where they continued to harvest sponges for another 30 years. Some of the older homes in Clear Water have the same general look, including the brick ovens built into the exterior walls!
The region has some wonderful traditions unique to that part of Greece. The dances are wonderfully intricate and involve careful timing. I look forward to going back in another couple of years!

Hi Marianne
Thanks for the message. I hope for Poland next year but we are going to stay with a friend in her newly acquired house in Cornwall in September.

Nostalgic Hythe
Posted: 2006-06-09 11:42 AM
Thanks for your comments on my Hythe report Marianne. The overriding feeling that I got was about how little the town had changed but how much I had changed, so decided to mention it in the report.
Regards

Your forthcoming trip to italy
Posted: 2006-06-09 11:37 AM
Hi
Yes, I do know it's not for a while but just a thought while I remember. Your compatriot of the fleas and his wife had been enjoying a pretty wonderful time in Lazio, north of Rome in the old Etruscan cities. This would seem to combine well with the areas in Abruzzo that I love so much.
Cheers
David
