Started in Ubud Bali and took in the local Gamelan performances and long walks. Decided one morning to head to Mt Bromo on Java. Caught a bus out of Denpaasar and was on my way. A few hours after the ferry across to Java the bus stopped for dinner. Generator was out so we all ate by candlelight. It was great even though I wasn't too sure what I was eating! Made it to Proboliggo late that evening and arranged for a driver to take us up to the start point of Bromo. Got a room very late that night and was up again at 4am for the journey. In pitch black we were lost. Couldn't see anything even with flashlights. We ran into a local man leading a donkey so we followed in hopes he was going our way. As the sun came up through the cloud and fog cover I caught my first glimpse of Bromo. As we got closer I saw there were stairs leading to the rim. Sulfer smell everywhere. It is a steep climp to the rim but well worth it. Smoke creeps out almost constantly. Nice view from up there too.

I miss playing Balinese gamelan so much (I've been playing for a few years now back in DC, but have been missing it since I moved). Thanks for reminding me and for the nice report!
