I took a bus from Penang Malaysia down to Singapore for a few days. Crossing the border overland was very easy with no problems encountered. I did make the mistake of leaving my bus once at the border to change some money and find my own way to Chinatown. I could have changed money all over Chinatown! Stayed at The Inn at Temple St in Chinatown and found it to be a good location. It was the week before Chinese New Year so every evening on the streets surrounding my hotel night markets were set up everywhere. I found the cheapest places to eat were in the local travel malls. They had all sorts of food courts set up and prices were really cheap. Seemed like a few of the buildings were catering to travel agencies. Did a lot of walking around the city and really didn't use transit except for my trip to the zoo. Took the train, then a bus. The zoo was excellent. Check out the bats. I highly recommend it. Also do include the Night Safari in your visit to the zoo.
